Holiday Fonni

Fonni, close to Nuoro, is the main winter tourist destination of Sardinia, as well as the only ski resort of the region. Monte Spada, between 1570 and 1825 m, is the highest mountain of the island, equipped with ski tow, ski-lift and ski slopes. This is the ski and trekking lovers hangout’s. The village is the main centre of Barbagia di Ollolai (historic region). Its well-preserved ancient city has lovely corners and amazing murals. The excellent Chiesa di San Francesco deserves a visit. On the mountain there are several hiking routes, where finding archaeological sites of nuragica and pre-nuragica ages. Donnortei Park with its source, Tomba dei Giganti di Madau, Gavossai Lake and paths on the top are just some of itineraries for an alternative mountain holiday. Throughout the year there are events linked to the tradition and religious festivals: Festa dei Martiri, described by Grazia Deledda, the Nobel Prize for Literature; Saint John; the ancient Carnival (s'Urthu e sos Buttudos); the Palio and Autunno in Barbagia, important event for the promotion of inland villages through their age-old traditions and local natural products. For this occasion private historic houses are opened to visitors.
