"Musca macedda" and the peasant

According to legend, long time ago, the Erra nuraghe, in the territory of Siurgus Donigala (Trexenta) used to be inhabited by a giant and monstrous “musca macedda” ( a fly that attacks the herbaceous cultivations: some iconographies show San Sisinnio trying to tread on a cloud of this noxious insect). On day, the fly endowed with evil powers, turned into an attracting young lady.

A peasant with two oxes, passing there, saw her, and her rare beauty stunned him. The woman invited him to come in to her house, and the men immediately accepted. Once inside the Erra nuraghe, the peasant saw jewels and other precious assets, stack in big amounts: he guessed that something strange was going on, but he tried not to show his intuition to the woman. She said to him to choose one of the many jewels: as a present for him, in sign of hospitality.

The peasant indicated two bronze bells, probably the objects of minor value among all of them on display. The woman looked at him, with astonishment. The men asked her to wait few minutes: the time to hang the little bells to his oxes and came back. The woman agreed. But the peasant, once outside the nuraghe, obstructed the entrance with a giant rock one and run away towards his town. From then on, the “musca macedda” was out of sight.
