The Christ of Alicante watched over by the Jermans in the heart of Alghero
One day, many years ago, a storm attacked the coast of Alghero. The water invaded the Catalan city. When the waves calmed down and the fury of the sea stopped, the fisherman went back to the harbor to verify the damages and to check the winds. They saw a box floating on the water and they had the intuition that was something precious as it was in a special wood, built with care. The fishermen, thinking that it was a treasure trove, tried to recover it.
That was a difficult mission as the box was really heavy. In the meantime, in Alghero rumours were going around that there was a box carrying some magic or sacred object. Thus, the Jermans (brothers) of the Misericordia were called to try to pull it up: but at the beginning their efforts were useless. Until somebody said loudly: “Christus!”, then, as if by magic, the box slipped out without effort on the land.
Inside the box, they found a statue of Christ in wormwood with a sweet, sad and expressive face. Laid down into a gilded coffin, his injuries were rubies settled into the dark wood. The Jermans took it to their site, and from then on, they take care of it in the little church of the Misericordia. The Crucifix of Alicante, that “decided” to stop in Alghero, since then goes along the street of the city, repeating the pains of the Passion, surrounded by many worshipers. The Jermans watch over him, during the long night on the cross, as the old warrior monks.
