San Mauro, in Sorgono celebration in the “cumbessias” and Palio in the galoppatoio
The feast of San Mauro is one of the most important in Sorgono. Up to the last year , it was celebrated on the last Sunday of May, but to avoid its coincidence with the more important feast of Corpus Domini, in 2005, the town priest postponed it to the first week of June. The rural sanctuary of San Mauro is situated on the side of Monte Lisai, at few kilometers from Sorgono.
Among the foreseen celebrations on the occasion of the religious festival we recommend the Palio of San Mauro (at the bottom of the hill dominated by the church, a riding school and a track have been recently built), Sardinian dancing and singing in the square, tasting of food farming products, exhibition about the sanctuary and about old traditions.
Until approximately forty years ago, San Mauro's festival (Sagra di San Mauro) was nine-day long and attracted farmers from all over Sardinia. Three days were in fact dedicated to the bovine fair, and other three the horse and sheep fairs.
During the first half of last century, San Mauro's festival was divided in three parts: "San Mauro dei dolori" (San Mauro of pains) in January, dedicated to people suffering from rheumatism; "San Mauro dei fiori" (San Mauro of flowers) the day after Easter Monday, symbolizing spring salutation; and "San Mauro prospero" at the end of May, as harvest festival.
