Procession on the Monte Ortobene for the Rendentore
On the Monte Ortobene (Nuoro), at the end of August, it is celebrated the Festa del Redentore (the Redeemer Feast) dedicated to CristoRedentore (Christ the Redeemer). At the foot of the big bronze statue of Jesus (7 meters high), which was founded on the 29th August 1901 (on the day of the first edition of the feast) a huge crowd of faithfuls (who come from all around Sardinia) and tourists meet to take part to one of the most important Sardinian religious events.
Besides the Christian ritual, many other events take place, such as folk events, dances and Sardinian songs with the participation of the best Sardinian groups in costume and the Mamuthones (Mamoiada), Thurpos (Orotelli), Boes and Merdules (Ottana), that show the most mysterious carnival masks of the Barbagie. At dawn of the 29th of August the pilgrims start from the Cathedral of Santa Maria della Neve, while late in the morning the real procession on the mountain begins to conclude in the center of Nuoro. The long day ends with the shows in the communal amphitheater.
