Caves and canyons attract speleologist from all over the world
The Barbagie are a paradise for speleologist from all over the world, since this Sardinian region is full of natural cavities to visit. Some of these caves demand a great physical training, beyond the technical preparation. We suggest contacting local guides, for those who are not expert in this field.
Also in Ogliastra are located numerous sites for speleology lovers: for example, in the territory of Urzulei there is a part of the famous gorge of Gorroppu, that is really worth a visit.
Guided by qualified staff, it is possible to enter the gorge and living exciting experiences, between the gorges dug by the water, since where millions of years ago the sea used to flow inside there.
In Nuorese region, like the nearby regions of Barbagie and Ogliastra, there are even numerous opportunities for speleology lovers, in virtue of the territory's morphology (Dorgali is an exemplar zone). However, great precaution is recommended.
The whole oriental part of Sardinia, including the Sarrabus, is rich in sites that attract speleologists from all over the world. Over the course of millenniums, the water has deeply dug the rock, presenting points with important characteristics of scientific interest.
In Gerrei, there is not the same amount of caves as in other regions of Sardinia. However, it is possible to find some locations of remarkable scientific interest, like Gospuru and Pittìolu (Armungia). Here, very old fossils(400 million years old) have been discovered.
The big amount of caves some of which are invaded by a really cold water (attracting speleosub fans from all over Europe), makes the Sulcis-Iglesiente the ideal place for those who love this discipline. It is worth also going to the deep and dark gorge of Is Cioffus, on the Monte Nieddu, not far from Sarroch. In the same territory the gorge of Bidda Mores (next to Monte Tiriaxeddu) is also interesting.
Nevertheless, it may seem strange, but to visit caves and cavity of a relevant interest there is no need to go away from Cagliari. In fact, the city underground is very rich in caves dug by the continuous water action that abundantly flows in the layers and, sometimes, originates landslides. Some speleo groups organize guided visits. In order to access cavities at the feet of Capo Sant’Elia, in the zone of Cala Fighera and Calamosca it is better to move by sea: it is easier (in some cases it is the only way) and at the same time, the beauty of the turquoise sea can be admired.
