Sardinia is rich in humid zones: habitat of avifauna
In contrast with the drought at the beginning of the millennium, Sardinia has numerous humid zones partly thanks to the precipitations of the last 3 years. The artificial lakes of the Cedrino and of the river Posada offer beautiful opportunities to people desiring to discover the inner areas of the Baronìe. Walks in the middle of the green, with the possibility to admire different species of animals. We particularly recommend the natural Oasis of Bidderosa, in the Orosei territory (limited entrance) and the pond of Orvile (behind Posada beach), where nest several examples of sultan chicken, pink flamingo and grey heron.
Gallura
Rich in fish and in fauna, with many bird species (mainly migratory): the lake of San Teodoro, separated by the sea of the homonym beach, is full of natural beauties.
Mandrolisai
Travelers on the Mandrolisai region, cannot miss the Benzone artificial lake, perfectly set into the surrounding landscape.
Monte Acuto-Goceano
The lake Coghinas is among the favorite tourist destinations of the region. Here, eels are bred to be used in the kitchen especially for the “panadas” (look at the Food section). In general, between autumn and spring (mostly when rains are abundant) is a very suggestive corner plunged into the green.
Montiferru
On the Montiferru borders we find a portion of the Omodeo lake, the biggest artificial lake in Italy. Thanks to the abundant rains of the last 2 years, it has regained its vitality as it used to be in the past. It hosts numerous faunal species. The largest part of its surface, by the way, is part of the Barigadu region.
Nurra
The lake Baratz, at about 15 km from Alghero (behind Porto Ferro beach), is the unique real natural lake in Sardinia. It hosts hundreds species of birds and marine animals. This protected area, surrounded by a wide secular pine wood, permits studious and admirers to observe the fauna from privileged positions (look at Birdwatching), for example from the cane fields. The surrounding sandy dunes created a barrier avoiding the direct link with the sea: the lake Baratz is consequently supplied by pluvial sweet-water springs. The pound of Càlic, between Alghero and Fertilia, is one of the most interesting humid zones of the Nurra with numerous aquatic species and birds. Even the pond of Pilo, in the territory of Porto Torres, and Casaraccio (not far from Stintino) are rich in bird and fish fauna.
Ogliastra
In the territories between Barisardo and Cardedu, it is worth seeing the humid zones of Tramalitzia and Bau Eni, in which numerous animal species live. These are sites of great natural interest.
Peninsula of Sinis
In the peninsula of Sinis, we especially point out the pond of Cabras. The lagoon of Mistras is separated from the sea by a white-sand line and by a strip of semi-wet land. The pond of Sa Salìna Manna, close to Putzu Idu. The presence of sedentary and migratory birds (avifauna) recall many admirers and studious (look at Birdwatching). Interesting is also the vegetation: a large number of the plants that spontaneously grow on the wetland are used for the production of baskets, pannier and even the typical boats of the area, “is fassonis” (look at Artcraft). It is even possible to admire huts made with bog grass, where the fishermen live. In the same region, at few km from Capo Mannu and Putzu Idu, it is worth visiting the naturalistic oasis of Sal’e Porcus where the pink flamingo, migrating from Africa and central Europe, found shelter and food.
Sassarese-Romangia
The pond of Platamona, not far from the homonym beach, is surrounded by sandy dunes where had been planted a pine wood. It is possible to admire the numerous bird species which live there all year round.
Sulcis-Iglesiente
Behind the dunes and the gulf of Porto Pino, there are the ponds of Is Brebeis and of Maestrale, still used nowadays for fish breeding. In spring-summer time is possible to watch many species of birds, like pink flamingo.
