In Sulcis-Iglesiente a beautiful but sometimes treacherous sea
The Sulcis-Iglesiente coasts is affected by the so-called submersion phenomenon. The first stretch of its costs are in fact frequently coated with water. The strong marine and windy erosion have given this zone some of the most beautiful beaches of Sardinia, from Chia to Marina of Arbus, going through the dunes of Porto Pino, Piscinas (the most important complex of dunes in Europe, but also the dunes of Chia which reach the 20 meters of hight), Scivu and San Nicolò (near Buggerru: this shoreline is about ten kilometers long). Wind and waves are in fact among the greatest attractions of this region, typical destination of many surfers who come from all over Italy.
Capo Spartivento, Capo Malfatano and Capo Teulada are the most fascinating promontories and the cliffs of the coast stretch from Masua to Nebida are very evocative. This part of Sardinia is full of perils such as marine currents, whirlpools, waves and unexpected declivities, therefore it is recommended a special caution during swimming, especially before children, elderlies and disabled people.
Very fascinating is the little island of Pan di Zucchero, in front of Porto Flavia (look at Mines): it was renamed so in 1700's (previously it was famous with its name in Sardinian language, “Concali su Terraini”) for its similarity to the higher “Pao de Azucar” in Rio de Janeiro (Brasil).
