Sarrabus between sand and rocks

Sarrabus between sand and rocks

In the region of Sarrabus we include also the territory of Sinnai, even if it is geographically placed in Campidano. The coast of this Council begins immediately after Quartu Sant'Elena and presents a rich variety of typologies, from sandy beaches (generally of thick sand) to rocky reefs. Here, numerous resorts, get really busy in the summertime, from Geremeas to Torre delle Stelle. Going north, many other sea localities follow one other: Solanas, Capo Boi, Villasimius with its white sandy beaches, Porto Giunco, Cala Pira, Cala Sinzias, Santa Giusta, Costa Rei, Piscina Rei, Capo Ferrato, Portu S’Ilixi, Feraxi, Colostrai, San Giovanni, until the mouth of Flumendosa.

There is an embarrassingly wide choice, but for sure, if you have a boat or a rubber dinghy you can easily reach spots inaccessible or difficult to reach overland. The sandy materials transported by the Flumendosa and the river Picocca have enriched many beaches.

The shoreline of Castiadas borders with the renowned Costa Rei, one of the most beautiful and also most populated locality of the Southeastern Sardinia (especially over the summer). The beach of Santa Giusta, in front of the rock called "scoglio di Peppino", is one of the reference points of residents and tourists. Very beautiful are also the beaches of Cannisoni, San Pietro and Monte Turno (known also as Cala Sant' Elmo), but the prizewinners for their celebrity are Cala Sinzias and Cala Pira. All along the coast you find natural swimming pools dug from the sea inside cliffs.

Villasimius is the most important locality of Sarrabus coastal area. From the Seventies, its economy turns on tourism, especially during summer, thanks to an appreciable and adapted hospitality organization. From the provincial panoramic road and from the valleys surrounding the town you can see the Gulf of Carbonara, between Capo Boi and Capo Carbonara, the Isola dei Cavoli and the Isola di Serpentara. In particular, Porto Giunco and “la spiaggia del riso” (the beach of the rice) are two beaches of outstanding beauty, with the coastal tower perpendicular to the sea. Over the last years, the dock of Villasimius, has been remarkably expanded and equipped with services.

In the territory of Villaputzu, finally, the beach of the mouth of the Flumendosa river, next to Porto Corallo, it is one of the most beautiful in the oriental Sardinia. In the same territory you could also admire the beach of Quirra.
