In the Gallura region a large part of the Italian cork production
The bark of particular kind of oak (Quercus suber L.), that grows especially in Gallura woods, permit the periodic extraction of cork. Sardinia on its own covers nearly the entire Italian cork production.
Calangianus boasts numerous industries on this field, that produce bottle caps (clearly preferable to those in silicon, recently introduced into the wine market), food storage containers (especially the big trays for meats and fish roast), several objects (frames, statuette, agendas), insole and upper for footwear, and insulating boards for building. A large part of the products is exported into other regions of Italy and abroad.
Apart from Calangianus, the cork is also worked in Tempio Pausania, Olbia, Aggius, Luras, Monti and Berchidda. Since 1960, the “Stazione Sperimentale del Sughero” (the Cork Experimental Station, an instrumental agency of the Independent Sardinia Region) has given to this sector a remarkable contribution in terms of incentives (European Union founds) and research studies.
