Pinuccio Sciola, the artist from San Sperate who makes the stones play

San Sperate, authentic town museum (hundred of murals and sculptures embellish this locality of Campidano), boasts a great tradition concerning chisellers. Pinuccio Sciola is the best and the most famous local artist, one of the most important ever expressed in Sardinia. He was born in 1942, and after having studied art in Cagliari and Florence, he matured experience travelling around the world, making his works famous and appreciated in big cities, that is how he became an international-level artist.

He carefully chooses the Sardinian stone (trachyte, sandstone, limestone, granite), from which he creates artworks communicating to everybody his love for Sardinia. Sculptures that talks about a mysterious and fascinating island, immerse into the silent but not for this mean with melodies. When Sciola realized that the stone is not an inert and inanimate material, as it has always been believed, he identified a series of the so-called sonorous stones. Sciola says: “I have only learned to release the voice from the stones. It has always been there, but nobody had paid attention to it”. The fact is that, these sculptures, sometimes taking apparent primitive shapes similar to those of menhirs, produce real sounds, fascinating musicians and other people. Consequently, in some concerts Sciola's sonorous stones have been used together with the traditional musical instruments and percussion, rubbed and vibrated. A success that he keeps on repeating.

Pinuccio Sciola loves going around the world but he always returns to his San Sperate, where he lives in a beautiful “campidanese”house and often works outdoors. His 2006 project is to found an international School of Art, recalling into his town, young artists from all over the world, for a cultural exchange, permitting to go over the academic borders and barriers.
