The granite of Villasimius for the street paving in Cagliari
Villasimius boasts a great tradition in the stonework. Its chisellers have found jobs even in other European Countries, especially in Germany, thanks to their manual ability in carving and working this inert material. The territory of Villasimius is rich in white granite, but from its pits have not only been extracted blocks employed (altogether with basalt and tuff) for the construction of the Fortezza Vecchia (Old Fortress, look at Castles and fortifications). Recently, in fact, the white granite has been used for the slabs that pave via Roma, the main street in Cagliari, and other local roads of Sardinia.
Looking at the other regions of the Island, over the last years, the territory of Mandas (Trexenta) has rediscovered the tradition of the stonework, in particular of the vulpinite marble and the “corasullu”, quite popular in the surrounding valleys. The experience of its chisellers is giving a new impulse to the handicraft activity of the town.
In Mandrolisai, the town of Sorgono excels in working the stone with its chisellers.
Buddusò in the region of Monte Acuto-Goceano is also famous for the working of the granite, extracted from the local pits.
In the region of Sassarese-Romangia, appreciated are the Sassari handicrafts.
