Alghero, the capital of the red coral since the 1600's
In Alghero (Nurra) many are the shops that work Silver, but above all gold and create very much in demand jewels, even in pair with the coral. For centuries, the red coral fishing has fed many families of Alghero: not only ship owners and fishermen, but also the craftsmen, who have worked this noble inhabitant of the Sardinian Sea.
In the last few decades, the coral reefs have become more exiguous, but is always high the tradition of the local artistic handicraft, that forges red (and pink) coral jewels, often with insertions of yellow gold. Earring, pendants, bracelets, necklaces of the most various shapes.
In the old town centre and in the Lungomare (promenade) many workrooms and shops offers these jewels and small coral sculptures.
