
Metals without secrets for Sardinian craftsmen
Metals are worked in a large part of Sardinia, according to a consolidated tradition. In the Logudoro-Meilogu, the craftsmen of Ittiri stand out on both iron and copper working.
Sorgono is one of the localities in Mandrolisai that boasts a great tradition in the field. In the laboratories are produced: cancels, railings, beds, curtain sticks, chandeliers, objects for the fireplace, spits, gills.
Even in Nùoro and Orani (Nuorese), there are good craftsmen who produce cancels, railings, windows grates, stairs, beds, curtain sticks, chandeliers, fireplace and kitchen objects.
Dorgali is one of Sardinian town with craftsmen specialized in the realization of “a serramanico” knives, with a steel blade and a red deer horn handle, often very elaborate.
The abundance of metalliferous mines in all the Island has developed the iron working also in Nurra. However, the major tradition on this sector is in the locality of Alghero.
In the old city centre of Seui (Ogliastra) stand out the iron balconies produced from the local craftsmen. In the same region we point out also Villagrande Strisàili.
Guspini (Sulcis-Iglesiente) is one of the most renowned localities in Sardinia for the “a serramanico” knives ("sa leppa"), with blade in steel and horn handle.
Arbus boasts a discrete tradition in the handicraft production of “a serramanico” knives ("sa leppa"), with blade in steel and handle in horn. A wide exposition is on display at the Sardinian knife Museum.
The working of the wrought iron is quite diffused over the whole island, but Pula is perhaps the Sulcidano centre that boasts the greatest tradition.
Mandas is the locality of the Marmilla in which you can find really good handicraft laboratories.
