The type of loom used for the weaving varies from zone to zone. In some regions, like Gallura, Logudoro-Meilogu, Mandrolisai, Marghine-Planargia, Marmilla, Montiferru, Nuorese, Ogliastra-Salto di Quirra, Sarcidano, Sarrabus, Sassarese-Romangia, Sulcis-Iglesiente and Trexenta is usually employed the horizontal loom, by far the most diffuse in Sardinia.

Gallura

Tapestry is the best handicraft expression in Aggius, town that for this reason hosts the Ethnographic Museum of the carpet. The woof is obtained with the “a un’indente” technique (smooths and thick).

Logudoro-Meilogu

In Ittiri and Pozzomaggiore the craftsmen are esteemed for their ability in the production of both carpets with the pibìonis technique (in grains similar to grape), recently rediscovered by the domestic market, and blankets in rough wool finely decorated (in particular way those of Pozzomaggiore, called “fressadas”), and in cotton or linen (faùnas). In the same region, Bonorva has always been esteemed for tapestry made with the loom by hand, following the “a punta de agu” (at tip of the needle) technique.

Marmilla

In Mogoro we suggest you no to miss the “Fiera del tappeto” ( Tapestry Fair), and the Exhibition of the antique tapestry. The splendid examples make it an appointment not-to-be-missed for artistic-handicraft lovers of Sardinia. Mogoro boasts a great tradition in tapestry, showing bright colors capable of giving brightness to austere atmospheres, but also in carpets made with the “a pibiones” technique (in grains similar to grape)and in the dowries. Even Morgongiòri produces carpets and tapestries of high quality.

Mandrolisai

In Atzara the ancient tradition of the hand-noted carpets is still alive. Woollen and cotton carpets are produced in bright colours, with the “a pibiones” technique (grains similar to grape). Atzara boasts a great tradition also in the production of raw wool blankets: on the white colour stands out very coloured insertions of flowers.

Marghine-Planargia

In Bolotana the craftsmen of this field prefer the “a trama” weaving technique, with stylized drawings that make precious carpets and tapestries.

Montiferru

Lively the production in the Montiferru. Cuglieri boasts a great tradition in the production of carpets, tapestries and chest cover of various material. The craftswomen of the village are famous for the “prendidura”, it means cotton fringes to adorn the towels and the blankets of dowries. The craftsmen of Santu Lussurgiu realize very colored carpets, with the technique called “a pibiones”, that is a stitch similar to bunches of grapes. At last, Scano Montiferro is famous for the cotton and linen bed blankets, generally white or ivory. Characteristic are the low reliefs produced with the technique “a pibiones”.

Sarcidano

In Isili, between August and September, there is the unmissable appointment with the “Mostra del Mercato isilese” (the Exhibition of the Market of Isili), with the products of the local tradition. This village is famous for its carpets, blankets and tapestries with warm tones and a particular texture. In this village are produced even the saddlebags, once used by shepherds and peasants. The Museo Civico per l'Arte del Rame e del Tessuto (the civic Museum for the Art of copper and tissue) in which it is possible to admire real masterpieces of the textile art, is well worth a visit.

Nuorese

Sarule is one of the most important centers of Nuorese, from the point of view of the yarn tradition and quality. In Dorgali and Nùoro has spread a particular technique of “annodata” (knotted) weaving, that allows the realization of beautiful Sardinian carpets of modern taste.

Ogliastra-Salto di Quirra

In Barisardo the expert hands of the craftswomen produce pillows and blankets in linen (with the technique “a pibiones”, similar to bunches of grape) of excellent workmanship. Ulassai boasts a great tradition in the handicraft production of blankets, carpets and draperies. In Villagrande Strisàili you can buy hand made blankets and carpets.

Sarrabus

San Vito is the locality of Sarrabus where have been mainly conserved the ancient traditions in the field of the weaving, in particular for the creation of carpets (with wool grains of different colors), blankets of wool and cotton and draperies. Muravera as well, is appreciated for the quality of its carpets, that are bought also from the inhabitants of the nearby localities.

Sassarese-Romangia

In Osilo craftsmen of this field work very good the wool and the cotton with the technique “a pibiones” (with small grains similar to grape).

Sulcis-Iglesiente

In Sulcis-Iglesiente, Sant’Antioco is famous for the tapestries (prepared “a punta de agu” - at tip of the needle) and for the carpets, that have been rediscovered in recent age. In Villamassargia many are the craftsmen who produce carpets, curtains, blankets and bedcovers (in cotton and wool, generally for double beds or king sized beds), pillows and chest covers (they covered the wedding chests), according to the ancient and fanciful tradition of the island. Giba is famous for the handicraft production of blankets and bedcovers (of wool and cotton, generally for king size beds beds), chest covers and pillows, according to the ancient and fanciful tradition of the island.

Trexenta

San Basilio is one of the localities of Trexenta of greatest tradition in the handicraft production of carpets, blankets, draperies, pillows.

Baronìe

In Baronìe are used vertical looms, with the technique of smooth spinning. The antique tradition of the handmade fabrics has been maintained almost everywhere. Galtellì conserve a good tradition in the handicraft production of carpets.

Monte Acuto-Goceano

The town of Nule is renowned for the tapestry production in rough wool, with characteristic patterns in the shape of small flames, standing out on the pastel colors. Also Nughedu San Nicolò and Oschiri boast a great weaving.
