Barbagie and the trendy velvet dresses
In the Barbagie, the vertical loom is usually employed with the technique of smooth spinning. The antique tradition of the textile manufactured products has been maintained nearly everywhere in the centres of the Barbagie. From a couple of years onwards, the new tendency is the velvet dress tailor-made in the Barbagie: jacket, trouser, petticoat in velvet “a coste”, traditionally worn by the men from Barbagie, and nowadays tailored in the colors chosen by the customers.
Orune, Tonara, Gadoni and Sarule are among the most appreciate towns for weaving.
In Meana Sardo the old tradition of hand-knotted carpets is still alive. Woolen and cotton carpets are produced in bright colors with the “a pibiones” technique (grains similar to grape).
In Gadoni, blankets are produced with the technique called “un’indente” (smooths and thick), in bright colors, and geographic patterns.
In Orani, unlike the rest of the Barbagie, the horizontal loom are predominantly used.
