Assemini, the main ceramics centre in Campidano
In the last few decades, the art of ceramics developed all over Sardinia. However its origins go back to the nuragich peoples, of which the most important museums of the island preserve the artefacts uncovered in the many archaeological sites scattered all around the island. Vases, amphorae, plates, mugs and furnitures objects have been produced in many localities.
Among the localities of Campidano that boast traditions in this field, Assemini is surely the most important, it is not by accident that it has been entered in the category of the Italian cities of ancient traditions. Its craftsmen are specialized in amphorae, jugs, vases, teapots, oil bottles and ashtrays of pottery and enamelled ceramics.
Pabillonis keeps alive a good tradition among the Sardinian ceramists, thanks to the production of terracotta pots and pans (the zone is rich in pits of clay) beside that of artistic ceramics. From a couple of years the Town Hall is promoting formation courses in order to bring in handicrafts activities again, for the recovery and the reproduction of ancient artefacts.
