
Lot of silica sand, but the glass is worked only in few places
Sardinian populations learned the glass working secrets from their first contact with the Phoenicians. However, despite the presence of giant natural reserves of silica sand, this activity has not really developed, and it has only been limited to the expression of certain important realities, especially in regard of fancy goods and enamels.
Pirri, in the district area of Cagliari, that has been for many years trying to achieve the political administrative autonomy, boasted a great glassware, which then turned into a cultural center. However, only small laboratories have kept this tradition producing varied objects, from the colored or sanded glassware to crystal vase and glasses, to enamels used to enrich ceramics.
In the industrial zone of Macchiareddu, at few kilometers from Cagliari, there are two enterprises that work the glass, hand-made and in an artistist way. Smaller laboratories are instead located in Cagliari.
Sassari has always been one of the few very good centers of Sardinia for the glass working, in which this activity has constituted an important part of the local economy. Still today it is possible to find handicraft laboratories where the glass is worked in artistic shapes.
Oristano boasts a great tradition, which is still alive in the small laboratories, that produce several kind of items from the colored glass or sanded window to crystal glasses, to enamels used to enrich ceramics.
