Sarrabus, a craggy nature from Burcei to Castiadas
Sarrabus is characterized by craggy mountains, an ideal environment for the goat farming. In fact, it is not by accident, that this area is famous for the production of the goat's cheese. Burcei, a village not very far from the Punta Serpeddì, was founded in the seventeenth century by a group of shepherds of the Barbagia. Even today the agricultural and sheep-rearing activity characterizes the economy of this village, that lives up in particular during the month of June on the occasion of the festival of the cherry.
Surrounded by the green, Burcei offers many cues for excursions and mountain bike rides, as for example in the state-owned forest of the Brabaisu (where flows the homonymous Rio) and of the Sette Fratelli and in the ancient wood of Tuviois. Strong fascinating is the gully in which bottom flows the Rio Cannas: in the middle of the winter, when rains nourish it plenty, it is possible to admire the rapids. In this area there is also the Rio Picocca.
Some years ago, the pinewood of Sinnai, in the locality of Sa Pira, was unfortunately devastated by a terrible fire-raising: century-old evergreen oak, chestnut and durmast went up in smoke in a few hours together with them hectares of Mediterranean maquis and a lot of animals that populated it. But now the green lung in the shelter of the residential area, revives slowly, thanks to the reforestation intervention of the local government units. It dominates the surrounding valleys and borders on the homonymous town. The territory of this Commune closes the south-westerly Campidano and opens the Sarrabus , with its mountain system, which runs towards the Sette Fratelli, but also with some of its famous sea resorts.
Ballao, like some other centers of the Sarrabus, offers a very fascinating panoramic view, mostly when the surrounding valleys are recovered with a lush vegetation. Among those, we mention the Rio Bintinoi valley, on the road which leads to San Niccolò Gerrei.
The territory of Castiadas has been at the core of deep draining intervention of the flat zones, which have vineyards growing on it. However there are also wooded areas, one of those is that of Acqua Callenti (which translated into Italian from the local dialect means “hot water”). From the Monte Minniminni it is possible to admire a wonderful scenery, including the sea, which washes about 13 kilometers of coasts.
In Goni arouses interest the Pranu Mutteddu Park, which spreads out for many hectares around the important nuraghic necropolis. Peaceful valleys rich in oaks and in the typical flora of the wooded zones of Sardinia, induce us to contemplate the landscape and the archaeological beauties of a site, which is one of the most important in the island. With the precipitations of the last two years, the Mulargia lake has reached the maximum authorized potting capacity and offers a charming view.
Muravera is one of the most important agricultural center on the west side of Sardinia, famous above all for the citrus fruit orchards. The economy of this Commune is mainly based on tourism of the coasts but, a few years ago the inner areas of the pond of Colostrai (nourished by the waters of the Rio Picocca, it attracts many naturalists for the fauna, which populates the marsh) and of the pond of Feraxi, have been better exploited.
Capo Ferrato and Monte Nai are also in this area, they are two of the most well-known resorts of this zone. Among the beaches we mention Portu S'Ilixi, considered one of the most beautiful in Sardinia. But for kilometres and kilometres there is only an embarrassment of riches.
Agriculture is the most important producing sector of San Vito, a town placed near the Flumendosa valley. In the area nearby the village of San Priamo, characterized by a few houses built in the nineteenth century, it is possible to admire the wild beauty of its woods. Among the gullies, in the middle of winter, usually form little waterfalls, which flow into the Rio Picocca
