The Molentargius, the kingdom of the flamingo and of the purple gallinule
The Regional Natural Park of Molentargius-Saline, instituted in 1999, is a very interesting wet area. It belongs to the metropolitan area of Cagliari, which embraces both basins of freshwater (Bellarosa Minore and Perdalonga) and of saltwater: the last ones are suited for the production of salt of very high quality. Next to them is the sandy coastline of the Poetto and the flat of Is Arenas.
The Park of Molentargius-Saline has a characteristic: it is the only place in the world that, even being in a thickly populated area, it hosts colonies of pink flamingos (these birds in the local dialect are called “sa genti arrubia”, the red people, from the color of a part of their plumage), of purple gallinules and other species of flying animals. That is the reason why the area has been endowed with many bird observatories, adapted to bird watching. During the days of north-west wind, when the air is lucid, the photography lovers will have the opportunity of taking wonderful photos.
