Castelsardo and the Doria Family, from the fortress view over the Anglona
It was founded by the Doria Liguarian family and it still preserve its ancient fashination. Castelsardo is the most important town of the Anglona region and was called Castelgenovese till 1102. The castle, built thanks to the Dorias, dominates from Bellavista fortress the town centre below, destination of thousands of tourists which regularly come and visit this northly region of Sardinia. Castelsardo is one of the 7 Royal town of the island with Cagliari, Sassari, Oristano, Bosa, Alghero and Iglesias.
The beauty of this medieval settlement facing Asinara gulf, is even more interesting and enigmatic on the occasion of popular feasts, specially in case of the Holy week's rites, which are some of the more suggestive in the island. Anyway, the archeologiacal areas of this region as well deserve to be visited.
The Anglona is bounded by the Sassarese-Romangia region on the west, by the region of Logudoro-Meilogu on the south-west, by the Monte Acuto-Goceano region on the south-east and by the region of Gallura on the north-east. Anglona region presents both plain areas and not so high mountain relief, mostly of vulcanic origin. The highest top is the Mont Sassu (640 mts). Caves and splits are often visited and studied by climbers and speleologist.
The Coghinas is the most important river which with an artificial water catch basin divides this region from Gallura. Among the many beautiful natural beauties of this area, the most famous is certainly the so called "roccia dell’Elefante" ("the rock of the Elephant"), set at few km far from Castelsardo in Multeddu locality, on the road to Sedini.
