
More than two thousand years of extraction in the Sardinian mines
In many regions of Sardinia, starting from Sulcis-Iglesiente, there are mines ,where till fews years ago, silver, lead, zinc and coal were extracted. Authentic examples of industrial archaeology, which led to the foundation of the Parco Geominerario (Geo-mineral Park), noticed by the Unesco as Mankind Heritage.
The Parco Geominerario, among its aims, has the one of letting know to world the history, the peculiarities, the fascinating beauty of dozens sites, which gave the opportunity to work to thousands people, having a considerable influence on the culture and on the economy of vast territories.
A journey in the bowels of the hearth, which appeals to adults and children, but also the numerous students, who come from everywhere in the world. The Pope John Paul II, in 1985 gave way to temptation to descend to -200 meters of level, in the mine of Monteponi (Iglesias).
Among the sites to visit, in addition to the galleries and furnaces, where the extracted minerals were worked , some of the most beautiful management offices of the companies responsible for the extraction in Sardinia.
