The Carignano, more than a blending wine.
In the Sulcis-Iglesiente is cultivated one of the most appreciated species of wine from which derive some of the most famous red wine: the Carignano. In that area it is known under the name of "axina (pron.: àscina) de Spagna” (spanish grapes), and it was probably imported by the Aragoneses. Another theory affirm that its origins are to be traced back in the growings of Sant'Antioco island, in the south of Sardinia, and that was here imported by the Phoenicians. The Carignano of the Sulcis was first appreciated by the French only for beeing a blending wine but in the 1977 became a D.O.C. wine of high quality (Denomination of checked origin).
