A sip of Filu 'e Ferru to finish the dinner with a flourish
“Filu 'e Ferru” is not a mysterious name anymore for the many people not coming from Sardinia who have sipped and appreciated it. It is obtained by distillation of rapes, it is a colorless liqueur with a dry and very strong taste. From its derivation areas (Nuorese and Oristanese) it spread all around Sardinia. Its name (lit. ‘iron wire’) comes from the expedient used by clandestine distillers (who prepared it at home, without paying the due tax for alcohol production) to hide their stocks underground, leaving only the end of a piece of wire above ground in order to locate it.
It is an excellent digestive to be served in ambient temperature. Particularly appreciated is the “Filu 'e Ferru” of Santu Lussurgiu (in the traditional form or aromatized with the wild fennel), town where once almost each family had its own small production of this distillate, which is certainly one of the best ones in Sardinia.
