Villanovafranca
Villanovafranca town is carefully laid down on Marmilla's hills, at the center of a territory which was densely inhabited since the Nuragic age. The historical center shows the characteristic houses in stone, equipped with wooden portals, finely elaborated. The parish church of San Lorenzo martyr stands out from the rest thanks to the remarkable dimensions of its bell tower. At the interior it is possible to admire an interesting wooden choir. It is also worth visiting the church dedicated to Saint Sebastiano, made by the local chisellers at the end of the XVI century: a precious pipe-organ of the late 1700 is kept here.
From 2002, on the ex Granatico Mount of Villanovafranca, the archaeological Civic Museum host an exhibition of findings, pieces of local history from Prehistory to the Middle Age. The path spaces from the IV millenium B.C. to the VII century A.D. and it is articulated in three sections, with a "tactile experience" (including Braille panels for blind people).
Among the annual events that animate this locality, we recomand the Almond Festival on the third Sunday of May, in occasion of Sant'Isidoro festivity.
At few kilometers from Villanovafranca, you should visit the nuragic complex of Su Mulinu. It is a fortress constructed around the XV century B.C. using sandstone and calcareous rocks with a trilobate bastion and a circular defence wall and towers. From a scientific and historic point of view the recovery of an altar in tuff (IX-VII century A.D.) inside the nuragh, is also very intresting: apparently, Phoenician and Roman people used it too.
