On the road leading to Porto Torres, you will find the indications for the majestic sacred altar of Mount Accoddi (III-II millennium B.C.), a prehistoric monument similar to the "ziqqurat" of the ancient Mesopotamia. Next to it there is an area destined to the menhir: one of which is five meters tall. The sacred altar of Monte Accoddi is the only example of megalithic altar discovered up until now in the western Mediterranean region. Not far away from the prehistoric sanctuary of Monte d'Accoddi, there are the Domus de Janas of Su Crocifissu Mannu.
In the territory of Sassari, you will find the necropolis of Mesu ‘e Montes and S’Adde Asile.
In the countryside of Codrongianos, at about twenty minutes by car from Sassari, there is one of the most famous examples of Roman-Pisan style in Sardinia: the church of the Santissima Trinità di Saccargia (XII century), with a “croce commissa” base terminating with 3 apses. Unfortunately, at the beginning of the Twentieth century, the portico and a part of the facade were demolished, while in 1953 the “cumbessias” (accommodations for the pilgrims from all over Sardinia) were erased. Not much remains also of the enormous adjacent convent.
In the territory of Ploaghe, instead, it is worth visiting the church of San Michele di Salvenero (XII century). It is one of the few remaining example of building with “a croce commissa” base , but even in this case, the restoration works started at the beginning of the twentieth century have defaced the original bi-chromatic facade.
