Villasimius
The territory of Villasimius is characterized by a massive presence of coastal sighting towers, raised especially during the Spanish domination: we count seven, nearly all in good conditions. The Old Fortress stands out among them, it is one of the most imposing military building from the seventeenth century in the zone. It was built in the XIV century by the Arragon people and it was finished in XVI by the Spanish men. It is located next to the tourist dock of Villasimius: the recent restoration works have exalted the variety of stones used by the chisellers of Villasimius, such as the white granite (present in big quantity in the zone), the tuf from Cagliari and the basalt.
The town get particularity crowded during the summer months, thanks to the quantity and especially to the quality of the local sea resorts. We suggest you to visit the Archaeological Communal Museum, that proposes the reconstruction of the findings' original ambients (from the VI century B.C. to the VI century A.D.), the materials found in the site of Is Cuccureddus (VII century B.C.–V century A.D.), in the flat of Santa Maria and in the necropolis of Cruccuris and Accu Is Traias (I–IV century A.D.) and the loaded material of a ship coming from the Baleares that successively got stuck on the Island of Cabbage (Isola dei Cavoli) in the XV century A.D.
In the Villasimius centre there are numerous shops and artisan workshops of ceramic. This locality of the Sarrabus boasts also a big tradition in the stone working. Among the most important events we point out the “Madonna del Naufrago” (the Castway's Madonna), on the second Sunday of July: thousand of people participate to the celebration, a board of every kind of boats, they go from Villasimius to the Isola dei Cavoli, in order to lay down crown of flowers in correspondence of a big statue of the Madonna, placed at 11 meters down the sea bottom.
