Nùoro
Nuoro, chief town of Province, birth place of Grazia Deledda (1871-1936), the Sardinian writer, who in 1926 took home the Nobel Prize for Literature. Among the interesting sights, the cathedral of Saint Mary of the Snow (Santa Maria della Neve), completed in the first half of the XIX century: it shows two lateral tower bells and, at the interior guards some valuable art works. In the public square dedicated to the writer Sebastiano Satta, you will be able to admire some granite works realized by the Sardinian sculptor Costantino Nivola.
We suggest you to visit the Deleddiano Museum dedicated to Grazia Deledda: her personal works, documents and objects, explicative panels and photos are exposed into the house in which she was born. Very Interesting are also the antique furniture and objects of the house. Furthermore, it is worth visiting the National Archaeological Museum (it shows many objects found during the diggings carried out in the entire Province, going back to three thousand years of history ), the Art Museum of the Nuoro Province (the M.A.N. presents numerous works of Sardinian and Italian artists) and the Museum of the Sardinian Popular Traditions and Life (clothes, tools, jewels, Carnival masks, musical instruments and even various typologies of Sardinian bread, subdivided for geographic areas).
At few kilometres from Nùoro, it is possible to visit the small sanctuary of the Madonna from Valverde (XVII century). On the Ortobene Mount, instead, you will find the church of Nostra Signora of Montenero (beginnings of the XVII century). In the warm summery days, this mount is one of the most popular meeting point for the people from Nuoro and for the tourists, who on the way are lured to stop there to take a fresh breath. At the end of August, since 1901, there is a great festivity in honour of Christ Redeemer (Cristo Redentore). At the feet of the great Jesus statue in bronze, many faithful people and tourists assembled to participate to one of most important religious events in the Island. Numerous folkloric events are held with Sardinian dances and songs and the performances of the best Sardinian groups in costume. On the Ortobene, in locality Rìbu ' and Sèuna, you will be able to quench your thirst with the water of Milianu spring.
