Ghilarza
Ghilarza is one of the most important centres of the Montiferru. At the beginning of the XIII century, the church of Saint Palmerio martyr was built in two colours stones: a typical style of the “Giudicale” age. Inside the church is guarded the tomb of the Saint. Next to it, there is the Aragonese Tower constructed in “Giudicale” age too, perhaps in opposition to the close castle of Macomer. It is a two floor tower with a rectangular plant that, according to some students was part of a much bigger and complex fortress. San Serafino church built at the beginning of the XIV century is also interesting. Furthermore, in the town you could see the Orgono nuragh erected in different phases.
The house in which Antonio Gramsci lived with his family in Ghilarza has been transformed in a Museum, where are kept his objects and a complete library of his works. Gramsci (1891-1937) was a journalist, writer and philosopher, who opposing to the fascist dictatorship, was arrested and put in isolation, before being sent to the Ustica border.
