To visit in the territory of Barumini

The surrounding territory is surely worth a visit. The level Giara di Gesturi attracts thousands of tourists every year. Among the main attractions, the little horses that live in a wild state and are under tutelage since it is a race that risks the extinction. Fascinating also the Giara di Siddi.

At the entrance of Tuili you will find the rustic church of Sant’Antonio Abbot (XVI century), characterized by a wooden altar of the 1600's, by a pipe organ of the 1700's and by a fencing with the “lollas”, the arcades that accommodated the pedlars and the craftsmen during the festivals of the town. Inside the inhabited center, instead, is worth a visit the church of San Pietro Apostolo, that preserves numerous art works of the XVI and XVII centuries.
On the top of the volcanic hill, that dominates the small center of Las Plassas, not far from Barumini, are visible the ruins of the castle constructed in the XII century A.D., in the ambit of the fortifications of the Giudicato di Arborea on the border with the Giudicato di Cagliari.

Just a bit more distant, a few kilometres away from Villanovafranca (whose old town center boasts characteristic houses in stone, with portals in wood of valuable workmanship),there is the nuraghic complex of Su Mulinu: it is a fortress of the XV century B.C., constructed with blocks of limestone and sandstone, provided with a trilobed bastion and a defence wall with towers. Very interesting from the scientific and historical point of view is the recovery of an altar in tuff (IX - VIII century B.C.) inside the nuragh. In the center of the town, the parochial of San Lorenzo martyr stands out thanks to the cupola and the bell tower of remarkable dimensions. In its interior it is possible to admire an interesting wooden chorus. In the same town the church of San Sebastiano is also worth a visit (XVI century), it guards a pipe organ of value that goes back to the end of the 1700's. In the ex Monte Granatico in Villanovafranca, the Civico Museo Archeologico (the Civic archaeological Museum) hosts an exhibition of findings that tell the story of the territory from the Pre-historic Age to the Middle Ages. The museum pathway, which ranges from the IV millennium B.C. to the VII century A.D., is articulated in three different sections: the Territorio (the territory), the Fortezza Nuragica di Su Mulinu (the nuraghic fortress of Su Mulinu) and the Percorso Tattile (the tactile pathway) (included the panels written with the use of the Braille code).

In Villamar the beautiful Romanesque church of San Pietro (XIII century) is one of the greatest evidence present in Marmilla of the work lent by the Spanish unskilled workers, paid by the local Curia. Interesting is also the parochial church of San Giovanni Battista, in late Gothic style, with the bell tower of the XVI century and some important art works, among which a retable of 1518.
