Sorgono

Sorgono

Set in the heart of Mandrolisai and Sardinia, Sorgono is one of the most important localities of this region and it has an huge potential of development thanks to its many archaeological sites, in good part still to be entirely uncovered. For example, in Bidu ‘e concas locality there is a hill on which it is possible to visit one of best menhir concentrations in Sardinia: about fifty those already discovered, but in the students' opinion they should be much more. Recently some menhir have been implanted in the ground, in accordance with the archaeologists' reconstructions based on an air photograph taken during the Second World War: they are on line with the East-West axis, the astral guideline which paid attention to the daily movement of the sun. It seems to be real probable that, a few meters away from these menhir, lays a temple or a sacred area still covered by the ground and the vegetation

A kilometer away from this area there is the sanctuary of Saint Mauro, constructed by the Benedictines monks around 1120, on the ruins of a pre-existing church on the top of an hill that dominates the surrounding territory. Very important is the rose window (two meters of radius). Nearby the little church you may look at the “muristènes”, that in the past accommodated groups of pilgrims, while nowadays it is a basic point for turists and pilgrims who visit the sanctuary not only on occasion of the festival dedicated to the Saint (in the first week of June). In the back of the sanctuary there are some “lolle”, that hosted the street traders on occasion of some festivals.

At three hundreds meters from the pentalobed sanctuary thre is a nuragh, that takes the name from the Saint venerated with great devotion in this territory. Recently fenced in, is provided with two rooms and inner stairs that lead to the top, from which it is possible to see the highest points of the nearby hills, where were constructed numerous nuraghs. The stele of a tomba dei giganti (giants' grave) is still today visible at the bottom of the entry stairs of the sanctuary of San Mauro, in the territory of Sorgono: it seems that it comes from the near grave (you can see it in the photo) set halfway between the church and the homonym nuragh. At a range of two kilometers, it is possible to visit another giants' grave that, fortunately, is in better conditions but it is still to be embellished. Numerous the domus de janas, many of those are located inside of privates properties.

In the town of Sorgono is worth a visit the station of the Ferrovie della Sardegna (Sardinia Railways), where you can look at a model of stream locomotive and a rails rotatory system, in order to allow the reverse.
