Ozieri

Ozieri

The town of Ozieri boasts a very important past, since in the Eneolithic Age developed a rather avanced civilization (called “Cultura of Ozieri”) that influenced enormously the pre-nuraghic populations of the Island, both in the development of the funeral art (as for example, the "domus de janas"), and in the agriculture and in the sheep-farming, like as in the metal and stone working. In the Middle Age, instead, Ozieri (in that time called Othieri) passed under the control of the Giudicato of Arborea and became the chief town of the “curatorìa” of Monte Acuto.

After a period of decay, Ozieri recovered its natural political-economic position in the XVIII century. Since 1803, year in which the diocese was called Bisarcio, it is the bishop's seat. The cathedral of Sant’Antioco di Bisarcio is one of the main reasons of interest of this locality. It was built on the top of a volcanic hill, over the ruins of a previous building destroyed by a fire, using different kinds of dark trachyt. The cathedral was consecrated in 1174. Very interesting two levels porch that, in the students' opinion, was constructed in the XIII century. Going through there, you will have the possibility to admire the Grixoni source, constructed in 1882 for want of a local nobleman, who wanted to give it to the townsmen. On the same site existed since 1594 a fountain that supplied with water the town. We suggest also visiting the Museo Civico Archeologico (the Archaeological Civic Museum), where are present the sections pre-nuraghic, nuraghic and historical, and a room in which are exposed coins from the Punic period to the Reign of the Savoia.

Ozieri is famous for some of its gastronomic specialty, as the Suspirus (the “sospiri” are very appreciated sweets) and a cow milk cheese that has the name of the citizen and can be accompanied by the bread of Ozieri, a tasty “spianata” (typical flatten bread).
