Arborea
Arborea is a town that, from an architectonic point of view has not got really much in common with Sardinian culture. It was founded by Benito Mussolini with the name of Mussolinia, in an area rich in marshes, along a territory extending on the ponds of San Giovanni, Sassu and S' Ena Arrubia. The reclamation works started between 1919 and 1922 and, in October 1928, the king Vittorio Emanuele III of Savoia officially inaugurated the Mussolini Village, populated originally by entrepreneurs and workers immigrated from the Veneto and other north Italy regions.
In the post-war period this locality changed its name from Mussolinia to Arborea. Today, it represents one of the most flourishing economic reality of the Island thanks to agriculture. During the reclamation works, about 600 archaeological finds (IV century B.C. – VI century A.D.) were discovered and are now kept inside the town hall.
Among the eating-and-drinking events of this territory, we suggest you the water-melon Festival and the strawberries fair. The Vernaccia festival is held instead in Baratili San Pietro, a town, one of the main producers of this particular wine.
