The Pisans carried a new military and artistic ferment

The Roman domination finished in the 455 A.D., with the Vandals invasion. Then it was the time of the Byzantines (533 A.D.), with a short parenthesis of the Goths (from 552 to 578 A.D.), hence the Saracens (704) and Pisans (1216).

Thanks to civic architects and military arrived from Tuscany massive works had been done, like the fortification of the actual Castello quarter (Castellum Castri, received from the Giudicessa Benedetta: immediately the hill was seen as an ideal shelter-point to be used in case of possible enemy attacks), the construction of the Cathedral (deeply modified in the following centuries) and the San Michele's castle.
