Su Casteddu, the ancient pisan fortress
The "Castello" quarter dominates from his position the whole town and develops on the ancient pisan fortress. Thanks to its old walls, survivors of the 1st and the 2nd world war, the massive 1300th twin towers of Saint Pancrazio and of the Elephant ("Elefante") planed by Giovanni Capula, its bottlenecks and unexpected wide stretchs, it represents the memories and the still living heart of Cagliari. Even though the punic and roman traces, this part of the town was obviousily fortified by the Pisan, in 1217. Walking through its enchanting streets you find some of the most important historical and cultural monuments and buildings and antiquarians, antiquaries, handicraftsmans as well, enjoying of stricking and enchanting overviews onto the coastline and the town. Balconies in wrought iron, stuccos, decorations and eighteenth-century façades complete this suggestive old atmosphere. One of its most attractive detail is the little elephant of the Elephant tower overlooking the gulf. For local people this little sculture represents one of the most domestic figure.
