The province of Nuoro was instituted in 1927

The Province of Nuoro was insituted in 1927 , in order the third one after those of Cagliari and Sassari. In 2005 it had to cede part of its territory to the new, borderings provinces (Ogliastra, Olbia-Tempio, and Medio-Campidano). Nuoro is the bishopric from the end of the eighteenth century, but with less more than 35 thousand inhabitants, now it is no more the third town of Sardinia for population after only Cagliari and Sassari: during the last century it was amply overtaken by Quartu Sant'Elena, which comes today to 68 thousand inhabitants, but also Alghero reaches by now about 40 thousand inhabitants.
