The old town center is the authentic jewel of Alghero
In Alghero the old town center of clear Spanish architectonic matrix is worth a visit. In good part refurbished during the last twenty years, it is an authentic jewel that makes even more agreeable the permanence in the Catalan town, in which still today the Catalan language is spoken. Every year Alghero is visited by hundreds thousand of tourists who come from all around the world. The old town center is animated until well into the night, especially during the summer and on New Year's Day, by important cultural, food and wine initiatives and shows.
Among the many buildings, we remember the communal Theatre (constructed in 1862), Palau Lavagna (Lavagna Palace - with a sundial of the 1866 fixed on the façade), Palau d’Albis (Palace d’Albis - it goes back to the XV century, once was called Palau de Ferrera, from the name of the Catalan governor who ordered its construction: in 1541 it accommodated the king Carl V), Palau de Carcassona (XV century) and Palau del Veguer. Speaking of the ties with Spain, it is worth remembering that the project of the new promenade that connects the tourist port to the Lido beach has been realized by the Catalan architect Joan Busquet. Finally, the numerous and elegant liberty villas, in good part concentrated along the walk between the tower Sulis and the Las Tronas hotel (Lungomare Dante and Lungomare Valencia).
