The seven churches of Gesico and the sites of Trexenta

The seven churches of Gesico and the sites of Trexenta

Senorbì is the most populated and important town of Trexenta. Very interesting the late Gothic parochial church dedicated to Santa Barbara, constructed between 1640 and 1680, and finished in 1821. Interminable works, gone on by fits and starts, paid with the money of the inhabitants, than put down according to their incomes, to have the beautiful church and the highest bell tower in the whole territory (it reaches the hight of 32 meters, less of those initially planned). The new construction replaced the old parish. Among the works guarded inside of it, a crucifix of the seventeenth-century sculptor Giuseppe Antonio Lonis. In the near village of Segolaj (look at Ghost Cities) it is possible to visit the small Romanesque church of Santa Mariedda, built on the homonym hill. The original structure goes back to the beginning of the XIV century but it has been subsequently enlarged. Upon the portal rises a big bell tower. In 1910 a serious cholera epidemic was stemmed thanks to the premises of this church: a consent between the mayor and the parish priest permitted to isolate ill people.

Gesico has been defined the “town of the seven churches”. The most ancient among those existing is the small rustic church dedicated to Sant’Amatore, example going back to the Romanesque style of the XII century. There are conserved a roman sarcophagus and a silver shrine, containing the relics of the Saint, to which has been dedicated one of the main festivities of Gesico. The church of Santa Maria d' Itria as well, (XIII century) has been constructed in accordance with the canons of the Romanesque style, imposed by the Pisans rulers. In origin it had a bell tower with a bronze bell that, subsequently, has been placed in the parochial, the church of Santa Giusta (XIII-XVI century), constructed in Pisan Romanesque-Gothic style and subsequently corrected in Gothic-Aragonese: inside of it a black Christ in wood.

Guamaggiore was one of the most important center of the Curatoria della Trexenta but, between 1651 and 1681, the population was decimated by the plague. Of that period remains the church of San Sebastiano, but the church dedicated to San Pietro is even more ancient (beginning of the XV century).

In Guasila is worth a visit the neoclassic parochial church of Santa Maria Assunta, planned by the architect Gaetano Cima in 1839 and constructed in the highest point of the town, in order to be also  visible by people coming from the connection roads. The works ended in 1852. Particularly marked the likeness with the famous Pantheon of Rome, and not only for the presence of six Doric columns: the central body, in fact, is circular and finishes with a cupola.

The imposing Parochial church of San Giacomo in Mandas is worth a visit: it goes back to the XVI century (the works, begun in the end of the 1500's, were finished in 1605) and conserves in its interior some works of various ages, among which three altars in polychrome wood of the 1700's, two statues of Spanish school and the font of 1760. The patron of the town (who in that period took the place of San Giovanni Battista) is venerated in the sanctuary constructed in the point in which, according to the legend, during a thank procession organized by the barbaricini shepherds, the simulacrum of San Giacomo became so heavy that it couldn't be transported anywhere else anymore. Outside the very interesting medieval church of Sant’Antonio Abbot, are visible some rests of a roman road.

In San Basilio we suggest visiting the homonym church constructed at the beginning of the XIV century, on the basements of a church built by the Pisans in the shelter of a Byzantine sanctuary. The parish of San Pietro Apostolo, instead, was constructed between the XVI and the XVII century: it is supposed that, in the same place, rose another Pisan church.

In Siurgus Donigala there is the church of Santa Maria di Monserrato, reconstructed in the XVII century on the rests of a Byzantine or even early Christian church, as it is intuitable from the results of the diggings carried out in the past century (where were uncovered jewels, graves and various artifacts). In the church are preserved ancient votive candles, some of those going back to five hundred years ago: they were employed during the processions in honor of the Madonna, on the 8th March recurrence (look at Traditions). The simulacrum of the Verge is similar to the one of the sanctuary of Montserrat, 60 kilometers away from Barcelona, one of the most important places of cult of Spain.

The church of San Giorgio, in Suelli, guards an important past: constructed in the XIII century, it was the cathedral of the bishop' seat of that time. In the XVI century it underwent important refurbishing works, indeed the interior is in late Gothic style. Beside the church it is possible to visit the sanctuary of San Giorgio, that guards the mortal remains of the bishops lived in the XI century, and then sanctified.

On the top of the Uda Mount, at 370 meters of hight, the inhabitants of Barrali have constructed an altar in stone, turned towards the town. Beside stands out the statue of Maria Ausiliatrice. On the occasion of the most important religious recurrences, the processions carry out until the summit.

The church of Sant’Anna, in Selegas, was constructed in Gothic-Pisan style between the XII and the XIII century. The most ancient bell of its bell tower is dated 1608. From some years the parish has become an important point of reference for the traditional handicraft activities of the town.
