Many churches in Castelsardo but the pearl is in Tergu

In Castelsardo (Anglona), not far from the Bell tower, there is the cathedral dedicated to Sant’Antonio Abbot. Constructed between the XVI and the XVII century, on the ruins of one Romanesque church constructed some centuries before by the many Benedictines monks, preserves wooden works of value workmanship and the esteemed picture “Madonna con il Bambino” (Madonna with the Infant) painted by the anonymous painter known with the name of Master of Castelsardo (he lived straddling the XV and the XVI century). Inside of it prevails the baroque style, that reaches its apex in the chapel dedicated to San Filippo Neri. Beside the cathedral there is the church of the Purgatorio, recently refurbished.

In Castelsardo you will even find the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, which was built in the XII century by the Benedictines monks and, at the end of the XIII century, was entrusted to the Minor friars. In this Romanesque church is guarded a beautiful work in wood of the 1300's called La Pietà, representing the bust of Jesus with a monarch mantle and with the head encircled by a crown of thorns: the statue is carried in procession through the streets of Castelsardo on the occasion of the Holy Week. Interesting is also the Black Christ, simulacrum of the crucified Christ so called for the dark coloration of the wood. In the annexed center of the Confraternita della Santa Croce are guarded the instruments that have characterized the Passion of Jesus Christ, which are shown to the faithfuls on the occasion of the Holy Week). In the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the authorities of was what at tjat time Castelgenovese every year took a fidelity oath to the Statutes emanated by Galeotto Doria in 1335.

San Pietro del Crocefisso dominates an hill at the entrance of Bulzi. Constructed at the beginning of the XII century, it has been widened in the first half of the XIII century. Its original name is due in part, to a wooden group that represents the “deposizione dalla croce” (the deposition from the cross-today it is guarded in the parochial of the same town), in part, to the previous church of San Pietro di Simbranis, destroyed in the 1700's: a part of its trachyte blocks was used for enlarging the parochial of San Sebastiano. The two colors listings of the facade stand clearly out if compared to the rest of the building.

The small rustic church of Santo Spirito, in Nulvi, has been recently refurbished. The building, constructed on a small rise, dates back to the XVII century and, for centuries, every 8th June has been destination of pilgrims: a tradition that has been resumed in 2005, after the reopening to the cult, followed to decades of abandonment.

The basilica of Santa Maria, in Tergu, is considered one of the Sardinian medieval treasures. A first part was built in the XII century, however some portions are successive. The roof in wood, that is going to be refurbished, was remade some centuries ago clinging to the original Romanesque structure. Around the church of Santa Maria are visible the rests of an ancient monastery.

At only few kilometers from Pèrfugas there is the possibility to visit the church of San Giorgio, constructed between the XV and XVI century in Gothic-Aragonese style, with red trachyte blocks. In its interior is found a polyptyc of the XIV century.
