Nostra Signora di Castro, in Oschiri a small but really original cathedral
Small but original, the ex cathedral of Nostra Signora di Castro (near Oschiri) is surely worth a visit. Constructed in the XII century, in the period of the Giudicato of Torres Costantino II, with red and brown trachyte blocks, on the top of a hill that looks over the Coghinas lake, this church has had an important role until 1503, when the Pope Giulio II suppressed the diocese of Castro: indeed it was raised to the rank of cathedral. Even if it underwent numerous reconstruction works, it has a print of the Romanesque style of the Lombard school. All around there are some “cumbessias”, small houses constructed in order to receive the pilgrims.
