Nostra Signora di Buoncammino dominates Iglesias

The one that the Pisans in the XIII century B.C. named Villa di Chiesa, is the present Iglesias, a town which spreads under the panoramic hill where the church of Nostra Signora di Buoncammino is located.

The old town center offers numerous cues to the visitors, starting from the Town Council square over which looks the cathedral of Santa Chiara (the Guelph count Ugolino Donoratico della Gherardesca, that ruled Villa di Chiesa and ordered its construction between the 1284 and the 1288, year in which the Ghibellines of Pisa arrested him and let him starving for hunger in jail) was partially reconstructed in the XVI century.

Less important, but however interesting, are the churches of the Madonna di Valverde (XIII century) and of Saint Francisco d’Assisi (XV-XVI century) not far from the Town Council square.
