Castles in Sardinia

There are several remains of castles in Sardinia, but only one in Sanluri is still intact.
Some fortresses were erected in the early Byzantine period (VI-VII cent..), other castles are of the "giudicale" period (XI-XII cent.), others have been renovated or built by the Genoese and Pisan lords after the fall of the kingdoms of Cagliari and Torres, shortly after the first half of the XIII century.
There are other coastal fortresses and others along the ancient boundaries between the kingdoms (first half of the XIII cent.), and the long-held lands of Arborea controlled by families of Tuscan and Ligurian or Catalan origins (from the XIV cent.).
The fortifications of the main urban centers (see the examples of Cagliari and Iglesias) are worth to be mentioned.
During the Spanish domination fortification work was carried out to defend the coast with the construction of towers and fortresses, of which many are still visible today.
