On the Monte Accoddi a pre-historical altar similar to the ziqqurat
In the area of Sassari, not far from Porto Torres, you will find the sacred altar of Monte Accoddi (III - II millennium B.C.). With its truncated pyramid shape, this pre-historical monument remembers the“ziqqurat”, terraced altars with external steps typical of the ancient Mesopotamia: it symbolized the relationship between the earth and the sky.
You can get the top going through a long ramp, close to which there the area destined to the menhir: one of those reaches the five meters of height, and it is the biggest in Sardinia after the one of Villa Sant’Antonio (Arborea). The sacred altar of Monte Accoddi is the only example of megalithic altar uncovered until now in the western Mediterranean.
