The nuragh, a megalithic tower become a symbol of Sardinia
The nuragh is a log-conical megalithic tower, with a circular base, built with big blocks laid one upon the other in accordance with a concentric disposition that goes narrowing. Initially it was thought that they had a simple function of defence, but some scholars have remembered that, no foreign peoples were already arrived in Sardinia in that period.
It is believed, but there are not certain proofs yet, that the nuragh was used to represent the tribe of a territory and to delimit it: that is the reason why it was built in a place visible even at a certain distance. According to some other scholars, they were huge altars on whose top was lit the sacred fire of the God of the light. Around the main tower, walls and other connected towers could be sometimes built.
It is not by accident that the nuragh has become the symbol of Sardinia: in fact it is the only region in the world, which has 7 thousand samples, even if many of them are still partially covered by the ground and the vegetation, and some others are partially destroyed. The nuragh date back to 3.500-4.000 years ago. In some Countries they are some constructions similar to the Sardinian nuraghic towers: a particular that intrigues several scholars.
