The menhir, a sacred stone to worship the pagan deities

The menhir is a sacred stone with a lengthened shape, near to the shape of a stele: the pre-historical peoples implanted the base of these stones on the earth, often in accordance with an astral logic. Some menhir were worked with tools similar to the chisel, in order to engrave symbols, representations of the deities of the time, women and warriors.

These megalithic monuments can be found in different regions of Sardinia: Sarcidano, Sarrabus, Mandrolisai, Barbagie, Marghine-Planargia, Barigadu, Arborea, Logudoro-Meilogu and Nurra. The menhir can be also found in others European countries, in particular in Great Britain and France: it is not by accident, that the word menhir comes from the British “men hir” (the long stone).
