The myth of Metalla, where the Romans coined the coins

Metalla and its myth. This locality was considered the fulcrum of the Romans mining activity in the Iglesiente. But still today, we are not able to locate it precisely. There are at least two hypotheses: the first one would place it in the Fluminese, off nearby the temple of Antas (Fluminimaggiore), in a territory rich in iron, which was extracted in great amounts from the Romans’ slaves; the second one places it near the numerous mine fields of the current Iglesias and Buggerru.

It is for sure is that coins were coined in Metalla: the Romans were obliged to do it when they had to meet soldiers’payments, and the Urbe procurement took a long time to arrive.
