Nora, founded by the Phoenicians and exploited by the ancient Romans
Nora, which is only a few kilometers away from Pula (30 kilometers from Cagliari), is one of the main tourist attractions of the area. By the sea, rise the remains of the old town founded by the Phoenicians during the VIII century B.C. (it tells us about what remains of a sacred area, in proximity of the Spanish tower located on a promontory, and of inhabited territory), where evidences of the Carthaginian and the Roman civilizations have been found. Carthaginian are the remains of the so-called “altoluogo di Tanit” while Romans are due the main ruins of the site, like the amphitheater, the temple of Esculapio, the thermal baths (very interesting are their mosaic floorings), the largest part of the houses and the minor temple.
Not far from Nora rose Bithia, which was founded by the Phoenicians as well, around the VIII century B.C., but only the Carthaginians gave to Bithia a real administrative organisation. In the 212 A.D., the Imperator Caracalla extended the Roman citizenship to the inhabitants of Bithia.
