The King's cities tour: Northern Sardinia

The King's cities of Sardinia were oriented toward West, watching the land of Spain and they did not have to follow feudal rules but they were under the direct King's dominion. It was the year 1323 when the cities of Cagliari, Iglesias, Oristano, Bosa, Alghero, Sassari e Castelsardo
started to have privileges in an island that was under the direct Catalan-Aragonian dominion. The status of “King’s city” avoided to citizen to bare the imposition of the local lords but at the same times it forced them in the condition of exilied in their own country. The King’s cities where strategic and economics corner points, were ruled by Vicari and Podestà, helped by a Civil council with 50 components, according to Barcelona model. This experience will allow you to discover the 4 King’s city of the Northern Sardinia, Castelsardo, Sassari, Alghero e Bosa, time travel among monuments, towels and fortifications, centuries-old buildings and churches. To add more, some breathtaking nature scenarios, archaeological sites dated back to the Nuraghic age and two typical lunches for tasting local specialities.
Programme (Period: from March to July and from middle September to December - Lenght: 8 days / 7 nights ):
Day 1: ->Arrival of participants at the airport of Alghero, welcome by the guide, which will be with the group during all trip. Transfer to the hotel in Alghero, first tour of the city and dinner in hotel.
Bus track: Alghero Airport - Alghero 10 km
Day 2: ->Breakfast, transfer to the King's city of Castelsardo, to the ancient castle and to the Museum of “intreccio”, hosted in the Doria Castle, where you can admire handmade baskets. Typical lunch. Free time in the afternoon. Transfer to the hotel and dinner.

Day 3: -->Breakfast, transfer to Sassari and visit to the King's city and its Medieval old city centre with many stops to visit the church of Santa Maria, the cathedral of San Nicola, Piazza Italia, the Palace of the Province Government, the Palace of the Duke, the Palace of University. Free time at lunch and in the afternoon. Transfer to the hotel and dinner.
Bus track: Alghero-Sassari there and back 64 Km
Day 4: --> Breakfast, transfer to Bosa and visit of the King's city by boat on the river Themo. Starting from the outpuring of Bosa Marina till reaching the ancient city and seightseeing the ancient tanneries, the Cathedral of Immacolata and the Castle of Malaspina which overview the multicoloured quarter of “Sa Costa”. Continuing the journey we pass by the pure nature of the green countrysides of the Valley of Temo, rich with centuries-old olive trees through which you can see the Roman-Gothic Cathedral of San Pietro Extramuros, the volcano of Monte Nieddu (which has given birth to the valley million years ago). Typical lunch. In the afternoon you'll walk along the old city centre in the Medieval quarter of “Sa Costa” with its unique little streets and in the quarter of “sa piatta”, one of the most elegant Sardinian city areas, surrounded by high houses belonging to the eighteen and nineteen centuries, with beautiful balconies in wrought-iron. During your walk you will visit many handicraft workshop where, depending on the period, you might see how to work the filigrana of gold and the coral, the production of the typical wine called Malvasia, how fishermen prepare nets, how the women of Bosa work the so-called “filè” that is the embroidered lace handmade with animals and plants images and the typical “sa pigulosa”.Return to the hotel and dinner.

Day 5: --> Breakfast, journey in the Bosa hinterland to admire he last vultures flying in Sardinia. Your itinerary arrives till the cliffs from which you can see from close the griffons flying over you among a thick vegetation. Free time at lunch and in the afternoon. Dinner in hotel in Alghero.
Day 6: -->Breakfast, panoramic visit of the promontory of Capocaccia and visit of the Grotte di Nettuno (Cave of Nettuno) through the Escala del Cabirol (roe's stairway). In the periods in which the caves are not reachable, you will spend the morning visiting two archaeological sites: the necropolis of Anghelu Ruju with its huge complex of artificial caves used by different cultures and with 38 domus de janas and the nuraghic complex of Palmavera which consists of two central towers inside a protective enclosing wall, and a second outer wall with four corner watch-towers and the village was built around this central area, with roughly 50 dwellings that can be visited at the moment. Free time at lunch. In the afternoon visit of Alghero and its old city centre, a lively example of Catalan culture and traditions, but even Aragonian and Spanish, with its bastions facing the port and the Lungomare Marco Polo. Alghero is the most Spansh of Sardinian cities: the dialect of Alghero is similar to Catalan language, street signs are in Italian and Catalan. You will see witness the 300 years of Catalan dominion, started in the 1354 when the Genoan family of the Doria was defeated. Seven defensive towers divide the ancient city from the new one, we will see the tower of Sulis, Porta a Terra, San Giovanni and San Giacomo; we will visit Piazza Duomo with the Cathedral of Santa Maria, Piazza Civica with Palazzo Albis, that once hosted the Government. Dinner in hotel.
Bus track: Alghero-Capocaccia there and back 50 km
Day 7: --> Breakfast, visit to the Island of the Asinara. Free time at lunch. In the afternoon panoramic visit of Stintino and of the beach of La Pelosa. Return to the hotel and dinner.

Day 8: --> Breakfast, free time, transfer to the airport and departure.
