Ogliastra

OGLIASTRA:
Ogliastra is the region adjacent to Baronìe at north, Nuorese at north-west, Barbagie at west, Sarrabus-Gerrei at south and Tyrhenian Sea at east . Basically, we consider the region of Salto di Quirra part of it too, even if scarcely populated. This territory is mainly mountainous and wild, as a consequence several zane are difficult to visit: the Green Little Train of Sardinia Railroads offers the great chance to see it in a comfortable and exciting way, on a journey through (in the evocative Mandas-Arbatax path) a natural land of extreme beauty, otherwise accessible only to expert climbers very well equipped. Enclosed on the north-west side by the mount chain of the complex of Oliena-Orgosolo-Urzulei (the first two localities belong to Barbagie), Ogliastra boasts some remarkable reliefs that exceed thousand meters height (Monte Tonneri reaches 1.324 meters, while Punta Perda Liana reaches 1,293), however the overage medium height is around 800 meters.
The nature of some mountains has gave birth to big rocks that, especially on occasion of heavy rains, dangerously slide to the valley: Gairo and Osini are quite threaten territory by these instability phenomenas. The "heels", isolated formations of the great limestone blocks characterised this region: they are all over the place, from Gairo to Osini, from Ulassai to Ussassai. Plateaus are in abundance: the most important is Perdasdefogu. Among the numerous water courses flowing into this territory (often forming tortuous gorges that insinuate among the cliffs: Su Gorroppu is a splendid example, partly in the territory of Urzulei, it can be considered one of the most renowned destination by the hikers, being one of the deeper canyons of Europe: approximately 500 meters), we firstly point out the Flumendosa that bathes the nord/nord-west Ogliastra with a basin in its higher part. The river Flumineddu, Pramaera and the river of Quirra are the most important minor water courses: some these terminate to the sea in a spectacular union with small sandy coves among the rocks. In general, Ogliastra-Salto di Quirra is one of most beautiful region in Sardinia: several flora and fauna species populate this wild land, that has the advantage to posses both mountain and sea at approximatively only ten kilometers of distance. On the other hand, the few transport connections make of Ogliastra "an island in the island".

CURRENCY: Euro, credit cards are widely accepted (American Express, Visa, Mastercard, etc.).

LANGUAGE: The local language is the Ogliastra dialect, but the main official language is Italian. The use of foreign languages is little widespread.

WHEATER: the temperature varies between 5° e i 15° degree centigrade in the winter months, between 10° and 25° C in spring time and between 25° e i 40° C in summer. Generally, rainy winters are followed by dry springs and summers.

CUISINE: :
Coccoi prena: a speciality of Osìni, made of a pastry similar to the pardulas (but bigger), filled with potatoes, mint garlic, oil, little bits of lard and “casu ‘e vita”, a very tasty spicy cheese.
Chivarxedda: another specialty of Osìni. It is similar to a small pizza ( even if the base prepared with flour and water is thinner), and contains pieces of carrots, courgettes, onions and tomatoes. The cheese ("casu'e vita -cheese and life) used in the paste gives it its spicy taste . The Chivarxedda is cooked on a leaf of head cabbage.
Brent’e sàmbini (lit. stomach of blood): typical shepherd's dish, proposed even in some farm houses. It literally means “stomach of blood”, and refers to the lamb's stomach (washed with care in water and vinegar then turned over) half filled with the animal blood, lard cubes, pieces of bread and fresh cheese, chopped onion, salt and pepper powder. This is a particular tasty dish, it can be eaten warm or cold.
Culurgiones: the Sardinian ravioli, called culingionis in other zones of Sardinia, are prepared with a dough of seed corn or flour, eggs, salt and olive oil and a filling of soft cheese or ricotta, chard or spinach, eggs, butter and saffron. All dressed in tomato sauce and grated Sardinian cheese. Very tasty is also the variation filled with potatoes, lard, fresh mint, onion and garlic chops.
